I've loved art works, especially paintings from the Impressionist period, since I took an art appreciation course in college. While in NYC last summer, I visited the MMOA, but finding the Impressionist exhibit closed, headed over to take a look at the special Picasso exhibit, and on the way to that, found a number of 20th century artists' works scattered about.

Having taken my camera along, I asked a guard for permission to photograph the works. He said that they encourage people to take photos so that others will see the works also, but that flash photography is not permitted because it degrades the art work.

My method was to get close enough to photograph the work just inside the frame. I may have lost a few details on the edges, but feel that I captured the essence of the paintings without the aggravation of dealing with the frame. However, I failed to get the descriptions of some, so I left those with a ?? caption. If you can help me identify any of these, please leave a comment below.

This first blog entry contains all works by Picasso, mostly in chronological order. The second entry below contains various works by other 20th century artists both American and European. Click here for more about the  Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

Wikipedia on Picasso (1881 – 1973): a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor who lived most of his adult life in France. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937), his portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

Picasso demonstrated uncanny artistic talent in his early years, painting in a realistic manner through his childhood and adolescence; during the first decade of the 20th century his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown and immense fortune throughout his life, making him one of the best-known figures in 20th century art. More about Picasso.
